SWAKOPMUND AN OVERVIEW OF THE TOWN AND SURROUNDINGS |
|
Swakopmund is Namibia's premier holiday town.
Swakopmund is sitting on the Atlantic coast about 350 kilometres
from the capital Windhoek. The coast is popular in summer with locals because it gives a break from the hotter areas in the interior, and for travellers to Namibia, this also offers a break from the hotter weather. It's this escape part of the town that has created the holiday atmosphere in the town. Swakopmund is an adventure destination, with lots on offer. Major adventure activities are sand boarding operators, quad biking, sky diving. Swakopmund is also a major fishing destination and attracts hundreds of fishermen during South African holidays. Boat trips can also be done from both Swakopmund and nearby Walvis Bay. These trips are interesting both from a natural history perspective and from a historical angle. |
There are many interesting areas to be found near Swakopmund.
These include the Kuiseb delta, where dunes meet the gravel plains,
Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater region near the coast being swallowed
by dunes,
Cape Cross surroundings - Situated a good distance north of Swakopmund, this is an interesting area to visit for a combination of African history and the curiosity of the massive Cape Fur Seal colony found at Cape Cross. Giant Welwitschia - Welwitschias are old, long lived plants that look rather strange too. They are only found in the desert. Out in this region we find not only the Welwitschias, but also other plants and have the chance to see some reptiles and birds, including the desert endemic Grey's Lark Moon Landscape, Kuiseb Delta, Sandwich Harbour and the fast desert landscape all make this town special, beautiful, strange and compelling to visit. Bird watching around Swakopmund. There are many bird watching opportunities around Swakopmund and the coast. Mile 4 salt works has had a number of rare birds seen there, and there is a little freshwater pool in the end of the Swakop River worth birding at. Come with us, and we will do the best tour considering weather on the day. |
