Cave Décor

Namibia’s only World Heritage site is situated at Twyfelfontein.  This site has a prolific amount of petroglyphs (or rock engravings) from the people who occurred in these areas in historical times.  Not only do we find rock art at Twyfelfontein, but there is rock art found all over the rocky parts of Namibia.

We will explore rock art sites all along the Namib and neighbouring areas.  This tour, however, is by no means only about rock art.  The mountains and desert landscapes found where these sites are situated, and on the trips between.

We use the term ‘Bushmen’ to refer to the group of people who were the original inhabitants of southern Africa.  These people do not refer to themselves as one group, but rather as many groups with distinct languages and originally many different ways of living.

All of them were hunter gatherer people.  Others that acquired pastoral ways of life have are not included as the Bushmen.  In Namibia these pastoralists were referred to as the Nama.

The term ‘Bushmen’ has become seen as a derogatory word in today’s society, both with the people themselves, in academics, and in throughout the world.  However, there are no really good alternatives.  ‘San’ is often used, but the word also has a negative meaning.  Therefore we use the word ‘Bushmen’ in our marketing material and on tours, but we whish to be clear that we imply none of the negative connotations with this word.

Airfares are not included
